How Long Does It Take Granular Fertilizer to Work?

Last Updated on May 8, 2022

We use granular fertilizer because it blends with the soil and ensures the nutrients for the plants. This fertilizer comes in liquid, solid, or power conditions. You may use granular fertilizer for your lawn if you want to ensure a lush green grass carpet.

The question arrives, why use granular fertilizer, and how long does it take granular fertilizer to work? Granular fertilizer adds important nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, lack of these nutrients tends to slow down the growth of grass, and the grass looks pale. Furthermore, granular fertilizers are easy to spread all around the lawn.

So here I am to talk about how fast granular fertilizer works, how long do granular fertilizer last in soil and many other general things about granular fertilizers.

How long for Fertilizer to Turn Grass Green?

It depends on things like how larger your lawn is and how much you have applied. But more than these reasons, the fact work on this issue is which granular fertilizer you are using. Is it synthetic quick-release fertilizers or organic slow-release fertilizers?

If you want something quickie within a few days, you better use synthetic granular fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are man-made inorganic fertilizers that come from the by-products of the petroleum industry. On the contrary, organic granular fertilizers come from mined rock minerals, natural plants, and animal materials.

How Long Does It Take for Organic Fertilizer to Work?

Organic granular fertilizers contain nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, potash, and microorganisms. But not like synthetic fertilizers, these nutrients come from organic sources such as blood meal, bone meal, fish emulsion, finely pulverized fish, crushed shells, woods, etc. Now, these may not sound so impressive to you, but believe me, the grass really loves it.

As we all know, organic fertilizers are not like chemicals that simply dissolve into the soil. They are not quick-release fertilizers. Your lawn takes time to extract from the organic fertilizers, and the effect of the fertilizers stays longer than synthetic fertilizers.

Decomposition or dissolving of fertilizers also depends on the type of fertilizers you are using. Synthetic granular fertilizers may seem instantaneous, but their effects do not stay long enough. On the other hand, organic granular fertilizers work slowly and take several weeks to show their effect, but organic fertilizers stay for a long time.

Also, no matter which fertilizers you are using, like organic or synthetic, they will act faster than the granular fertilizers if the fertilizers are in liquid form. It’s because plant roots take nutrients quickly, and the surface effects last not more than two weeks.

How Long Does It Take 10-10-10 Fertilizer to Work?

So far, you guys have known about how long does it take for fertilizer to work on grass or lawn but it’s time to know about how long does it take for fertilizer to work on plants. The 10-10-10 fertilizer means the fertilizer contains 10% each nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are the most important nutrients for plants. Green leafy plants like celery, broccoli, lettuce, kale, cabbage, and various spinach get benefits of granular fertilizer after one month.

1. Does granular fertilizer need to be watered in?

– Yeah, you should apply water right away after spreading granular fertilizer. But the application of water is important because watering washes the fertilizers off the grass blades and mixes them into the soil. But if it rains after fertilizing, then no need for additional water.

2. Can I fertilize my lawn every 2 weeks?

– No, we forbid giving fertilizers every two weeks. It causes excessive growth of grass, water pollution, and lawn burn. At least 6-8 weeks should be the time between fertilizer supplications.

3. How long does it take for fertilizer to turn lawn green?

– It’ll take at least 2 weeks to turn the lawn green if you use synthetic granular fertilizer. Also, liquid fertilizer takes fewer days than synthetic granular fertilizer. For organic fertilizer, it takes 6-8 weeks to turn the lawn green.

Final Note

I hope you guys got the best idea about granular fertilizer’s working time. But be careful, don’t apply granular fertilizer on a hot sunny day and apply up to four times annually. Just make sure you are applying fertilizer on a cooler day and watering the lawn after fertilizer is applied.
